Rituals relieve anxiety and Stress

Graduation parties, weddings, funerals, Christmas: The life is full of rituals. A new study shows that they also seem to be an unconscious but brilliant Trick, in order to reduce anxiety and Stress.

Czech scientists have examined how rituals help people cope with anxiety and help to overcome difficult life situations without lasting impairment. In the journal "Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society" they report their findings: The researchers observed that people in the laboratory for the treatment of anxiety tended to act in a structured and repetitions.

You then have made experiments with people in Mauritius. The researchers broke the study participants fear by encouraging you to create a Plan for the event of a natural disaster, should be reviewed by experts. Since Floods and cyclones in this area of the real threats, this was a Stress-inducing task. Thereafter, a half of the group committed to a common religious Ritual in the local temple, while the other half relaxed only at a neutral place in a Sitting position. The researchers observed that the task had been triggered in both groups, the Stress, the religious Ritual, however, led to this decreased stronger.

The anthropologist Prof. Dimitris Xygalatas from the Masaryk University, explains this as follows: "Rituals help to reduce anxiety by providing the brain a sense of structure, regularity and predictability." The repetition and routine provide a sense of control, which help reduce Stress. So rituals could be a way to deal with chronic anxiety deal.
