Young Couple Welcomes a Baby After Thinking Wife Has Kidney Stones

In one night, Grace and Bryson Mawn went from being free-spirited 20-year-olds to parents of a tiny, unexpected baby.

The Louisiana couple got the shock of a lifetime when they went to the hospital thinking Grace was experiencing kidney stones — only to learn that she was actually pregnant and ready to give birth.

The ordeal started after dinner with friends on March 25, when Grace started feeling severe stomach pain.

“I was like, ‘Okay, you probably have kidney stones, you’re going to be fine,’ ” Bryson told KSLA.

“I knew, when I felt something down there, that it wasn’t a kidney stone,” Grace countered.

Doctors went to give Grace an exam, and as soon as she laid down, her water broke. Their daughter, Micaela, arrived in the early morning on March 26.

“The moment I heard that cry, I was like, ‘What! How is she alive? What’s going on?’ ” Bryson said. “So many questions, so many scenarios going through my head of what’s going to happen.”

Grace was extremely surprised, as she hadn’t noticed any pregnancy symptoms and had maintained her menstrual cycle. She was also on birth control, and a pregnancy test she took in January came up negative.

“I never felt her move during the pregnancy, I never had cravings, I never had morning sickness,” she said. “Looking back now, I did put on a little bit of weight, but it wasn’t like noticeable weight, so I didn’t ever think about it. I had my normal cycle, some months were a little lighter, but I just thought it was the pill I was on, so I never thought anything about it.”

The Mawns feel blessed to have Micaela, but they weren’t prepared to bring a baby into their lives. Bryson is an airman in the U.S. Air Force and Grace currently works as a catering manager at Chick-Fil-A.

“I set up a GoFundMe for us, because we had maybe a couple hundred dollars in our savings account, and that’s a scary feeling, to know that we don’t have a safety net,” Bryson said.

The GoFundMe has nearly reached its goal of $5,000, and the Mawns are receiving baby gear all day long from friends, family and people in the community.

“We’ve seen nothing but love and support for our family,” Bryson said. “And we’re both really young adults. I don’t even think I’m an adult. Like last week I was a child, and now we were put into parenthood in a night.”

Grace said she’s still in shock that Micaela is theirs.

“Whenever I look at her I’m like, how the heck did that happen,” she said. “But I’m super grateful. And I love her to death, so I’m happy.”
