It’s normal to lose between 50 and 100 hairs a day, and with thousands and thousands of hairs on your head, that small loss isn’t often noticeable. Some people may choose to take a supplement to regrow hair, though experts say getting too much of certain nutrients can worsen hair loss.
If daily hair loss is any greater than 100 hairs per day, gradual thinning may occur.
This often becomes increasingly noticeable in later years, when hair growth slows down.
Nonetheless, the American Academy of Dermatology Association (ADA) has outlined a number of things which may help.First, it says you should wash and condition your hair “without traumatizing it”.
Indeed, hair that’s thinning or falling out is fragile and easily damaged. It adds that some women scale back on how often they shampoo, though these results “are often modest at best and rarely get to the root of the problem”.

The ADA says dermatologists recommend their patients who have hair loss use a gentle shampoo, apply a moisturizing conditioner after every shampoo and make use of a leave-in conditioner or detangler.
The organisation adds you should forgo hot-oil treatments and stop at-home colouring, perming and chemical straightening. Also, limit your use of curling irons, flat irons, and hot combs, and use the lowest heat setting on your blow-dryer.
You may also want to brush or comb your hair gently, and only enough to style it.
The ADA adds: “If you have a habit of twisting your hair around your finger or pulling on it, try to stop. These habits can further weaken already fragile hair, causing more hair loss.”
Also, if you smoke, it is recommended that you stop.
“Smoking causes inflammation throughout the body, which can worsen hair loss,” the ADA says.
The health body also adds that you should eat healthy.
“If you’re not getting enough of some nutrients, such as iron or protein, this can lead to hair loss,” it states.
Indeed, research suggests that eating too few calories every day can also cause significant hair loss.
Finasteride and minoxidil are the main treatments for male pattern baldness.
Minoxidil can also be used to treat female pattern baldness. Women should not use finasteride.
Some wigs are available on the NHS, but you may have to pay unless you qualify for financial help.
The NHS website advises: “Do not be taken in by claims for wonder products.”
If your hair loss is causing you distress, your GP may be able to help you get some counselling.
It can be caused by illness, stress, weight loss, some cancer treatment, and iron deficiency.
Hair loss caused by a medical condition usually stops or grows back once you’ve recovered.
